What is a work visa?

The official name of the status of residence generally referred to as a "work visa" is "Technical/Humanities/International Services.

This status of residence is divided into three main categories.

1. technology

This applies to jobs that require skills and knowledge in the natural sciences. Examples include system engineers, programmers, web designers, automobile inspectors (service engineers), and construction managers in the construction industry.

The following requirements are eligible to apply

Graduated from a university or a designated Japanese vocational school (education requirement)
At least 10 years of work experience in a related field (work history requirement).
In addition, if you are working in the IT field, you do not have to meet the education or work experience requirements,
You may apply if you have passed an information processing examination designated by the Minister of Justice or if you are qualified to process information.

2. knowledge of humanities

This applies to jobs that require skills and knowledge in the humanities.

For example, these are clerical positions in the humanities such as accounting, general affairs, sales, finance, legal, and marketing.

As with the "Technical" category, applicants must have graduated from a university or designated vocational school (education requirement),
or at least 10 years of work experience (work history requirement).

3. international operations

This applies to work that requires thinking and sensitivity based on foreign culture.

Examples include translators and interpreters, trade representatives, designers, and language school teachers.

In this field, applicants must have at least three years of work experience.
However, applicants with a college degree or higher are not required to have work experience.

Change from a college student visa to a work visa

If you plan to join a Japanese company in April of the following year in one of the above positions, you must apply in advance for a change from a college student visa to a work visa.

If you receive a job offer from a company while still in school

If you have received an offer,You can apply for a change of work visa from December of the previous year.
Since the average review time is 2-3 months, early application is recommended.
Applications for new employees tend to take longer than usual to be reviewed from December to May due to the concentration of new employee applications.

Ideally, the application should be completed by the end of January at the latest, as you will not be able to work and receive a salary if you do not complete the screening process.

Need diploma to get results.

Work visas (technical, humanities, and international services) must meet education requirements.

For example, if a college degree is required,You will not be granted a visa unless you provide proof of graduation.

If you apply in December of your graduation year, but your graduation is in March, you must submit your certificate after the graduation ceremony.

If you receive a job offer after graduation

If the place of employment after graduation is undecided, the visa must be changed to a specific activity visa (employment activity visa).

If you seek employment while on a college student visa, your application for change of status may be disadvantageous.

In addition, after graduation, students will no longer be able to work part-time, so they will need to change their visa status to a "Designated Activities Visa" and obtain permission to engage in activities other than those permitted under the status of residence before engaging in part-time work.
